When the pain is not really in your back
If your low back hurts but the pain you actually cannot live with is running down your leg, or your neck aches but the numbness is in your hand, the problem is usually not the muscle. It is a disc pressing on a nerve root, and no amount of stretching or massage will take that pressure off.
Spinal decompression is built for exactly that situation. You lie fully clothed on a computer-controlled table that applies a slow, gentle distraction force to a specific spinal segment, then releases it, then repeats. That cycling is the point: it avoids triggering the protective muscle spasm that a constant hard pull would cause.
What happens inside the disc
Separating the vertebrae even a millimeter or two creates negative pressure inside the disc. That does two useful things. It encourages bulging disc material to retract inward, away from the nerve root it has been irritating. And because discs have no direct blood supply and rely on motion to draw in fluid and nutrients, it pumps hydration back into tissue that has been slowly drying out, often for years.
This is why decompression is a series rather than a one-time fix. Rehydrating and remodeling disc tissue is a biological process on a biological timeline.
What a session is like
Sessions run about 15 to 20 minutes. You stay dressed, you are secured comfortably with a harness, and most patients find it relaxing enough that they close their eyes. There is no anesthesia, no needles, and no recovery time. You get up and go back to your day.
Decompression works best as part of a plan. We typically pair it with adjustments to restore joint motion, soft tissue work to release the muscles that have been compensating, and specific core work so the segment stays stable once the pressure is off.
Benefits of spinal decompression therapy
- Relieves pressure on compressed spinal nerves
- Rehydrates and renourishes degenerated discs
- Reduces radiating pain, numbness, and tingling
- A non-surgical option before considering injections or surgery
- No drugs, no downtime, no recovery period
Conditions we use this for
Herniated & Bulging Discs
A disc diagnosis is not a sentence. Most herniations respond well to conservative care without ever reaching an operating room.
Sciatica
Shooting pain from the low back into the leg is a nerve problem, and treating the muscle it runs through will never solve it.
Back Pain
The most common reason people find us, and one of the most treatable, once you know what is actually causing it.
Neck Pain
Your head weighs about twelve pounds, and every inch it drifts forward multiplies the load your neck has to hold all day.
Pinched Nerve
When a nerve is compressed, the pain often shows up far from the actual problem, which is why chasing the symptom rarely works.
Spinal Stenosis
If your legs get heavy after a few minutes of walking but feel fine when you lean on a shopping cart, this is likely your diagnosis.
Spinal Decompression Therapy: common questions
Is spinal decompression the same as traction?
It is a far more sophisticated relative. Old-fashioned traction applies a constant pull, which the body fights by tightening the very muscles you are trying to relax. Decompression tables use a computer to ramp force up and down in a cycle, targeting a specific segment and staying below the threshold that triggers guarding.
How many sessions will I need?
Most disc protocols run 15 to 25 sessions over six to eight weeks, tapering in frequency as you improve. We re-evaluate at set checkpoints. If you are not responding, we will tell you and change course rather than keep you on the table.
Who should not have decompression?
It is not appropriate if you have had spinal fusion hardware, a vertebral fracture, severe osteoporosis, an abdominal aortic aneurysm, spinal tumors, or if you are pregnant. Your exam and imaging screen for all of this before we start.
Does insurance cover spinal decompression?
Coverage varies widely by plan and many carriers treat it as non-covered. We will verify your specific benefits before you begin and give you exact numbers in writing. We also offer affordable self-pay packages so cost is never a surprise.
